During Mr. Cowen’s presentation, I learned many things, which were not just about his 3-D printer. While listening to his speech, I realized that he was engaging everyone in our class, and not just the people interested in engineering or science. I also realized that he threw jokes around here and there while still keeping a formal vibe. I think that he did a great job of presenting his project and that it will help a lot of people. Not only is it a cool piece of technology, but it’s also useful which Mr. Cowen demonstrated. It just amazed me when Mrs. Sutton casually needed something and he could make it right there in less than 20 minutes for her. I think that he will help many people with his creations just like I plan to help create better environments in our school.
Genius- exceptional intellectual or creative power or other natural ability. Is this exceptional ability genetic or learned behavior? We may never know for sure, but for years many scholars and scientists have been trying to figure this out. When hearing the word “genius”, many people automatically think of someone being very smart and forget about the creative power part. Genius is not about solving a problem, but thinking of other ways to solve it. If you learn about the common thinking strategies of creative geniuses, you may become more intellectual in your own life by thinking outside the box. My genius hour project can help me learn some of these strategies because not everything involved with it is cut and dry. I know that together my groupmates and I will have to look for different solutions to get our desired end result. So go ahead, try it. Because in this world anyone can be genius.
In this article, it was shown that by creating assignments that students could choose themselves, productivity and learning engagement would increase. “Genius Hour” has been an ongoing idea for a few years now, but now it is starting to skyrocket. This project, inspired by Google’s 20% time initiative, inspires children to research a certain topic or idea that interests them and do something with it to help the school, community, or even the world. Everything is student driven with little instruction, so they may run into problems. Since not everything goes the way most people plan, it is an essential lesson to learn early on in life. It’s also essential to learn that there is not a road-map to life and when they grow up they will be in control, not other people. This can apply to my Genius Hour project as well, since I will be taking on challenging projects. I know not everything will go the way I plan, but I will just keep swimming.
For this quarter Kayla, Meryl, and I plan to get rooms ready to redesign. We will be re-doing room 110 which is a meeting room at our school. We will also be creating a reading room for students to use during free hours and before/after school. Our plan is to find an empty room for the reading room, and start up-cycling furniture for the room. We will be starting to look at furniture, posting, and lighting for room 110. We plan to start a go-fund me website for room 110 and hold fundraisers for the reading room to raise money for all the costs.
